FAQs

  • For first-time colon hydrotherapy clients

Please note Women in their monthly cycle can still benefit greatly from having a colonic treatment. Because the body is already in a natural state of cleansing during that time of the month, the session can prove to be even more beneficial. Many of our clients have noticed a decrease in cramping, bloating, moodiness and fatigue afterward.

In the 2-3 days prior to your Colon Hydrotherapy session, we suggest that you eat primarily seasonal and organic vegetables, fruits, juices, and whole grains. Ideal hydration is drinking half of your weight in ounces of water or other pure liquids like organic teas or fruit/vegetable juice. The only thing that we require of you on the day of your appointment is that you limit your fluid intake and DO NOT eat in the 2 hours immediately before your appointment. Once you arrive at our office, we will ask you to prepare yourself for the session by emptying your bladder, undressing from the waist down, and covering yourself with a gown to assure your modesty. Soothing music, essential oils, color therapy glasses, and a heated blanket all help to create an atmosphere of relaxation and safety.

    DIRECTLY BEFORE AND AFTER

Suggested Foods and beverages to be AVOIDED directly BEFORE and AFTER your session:

    Fatty and fried foods

    White flour products

    Ice Cream

Nuts and seeds should also be avoided for 24 hours before treatment

Please remember the better you nourish your body with food you already know digests easily and comfortably for you, the better you will feel. Organic and healthy food is always a plus and can feel even more beneficial after your treatment. You are what you eat. You will feel what you eat, after a colonic, more than ever.

  • The colon, or large intestine, is located in the end portion of the human digestive tract. Its primary functions are to eliminate waste, conserve water, and re-absorb electrolytes and minerals. Colon irrigation is a safe and effective method for cleaning the colon of waste and for ridding the system of this unwanted material. Through repeated gentle flushing of pure filtered warm water, colon hydrotherapy supports the hydration of the colon and promotes the loosening and elimination of waste matter. For those with occasional constipation, colon hydrotherapy promotes ease by encouraging and engaging the natural peristalsis in the colon. Because colon hydrotherapy supports the elimination of waste from the colon, it can also be used as part of the approved preparation for a colonoscopy when performed by a properly trained colon hydrotherapist with approval of a prescribing Gastroenterologist.

WHY IS COLON HYDROTHERAPY SO EFFECTIVE?

Colon hydrotherapy cleanses the colon: Toxic materials are broken down and removed so they can no longer harm the body or inhibit assimilation and elimination. Even debris that has built up over a long period is gently removed in the process of a series of irrigations. Once impacted material is removed, your colon can begin again to function as it was meant to. Colon Hydrotherapy is a whole body rejuvenation treatment. Colon Hydrotherapy exercises the colon muscles: The buildup of toxic debris weakens the colon muscles and impairs its functioning. The gentle filling and emptying of the colon improves the peristaltic activity (muscular contraction) by which the colon naturally moves material. This will help speed up the transit time of fecal material once the colon muscles have been toned, strengthened, and rejuvenated.

Colon Hydrotherapy can help to stimulate parts of the colon: When conditions exist in the colon, they alter its shape and structure, which in turn causes more health problems. The gentle action of the water, coupled with the massage techniques and the experience of the colon hydro therapist, help eliminate pockets of waste, finally enabling the colon to resume its natural state. Colon Hydrotherapy hydrates the body: Our bodies are made of 65-75% water and with the use of the pure water in the colonic, our bodies are able to absorb much-needed clean and pure water to hydrate our cells, from the inside, and out. Read, “Water Can Undermine Your Health” by Norman Walker, D.S., to get a full account of what water does within our bodies.

WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO TO PREPARE FOR A COLONIC?

It is recommended that you DON’T eat 2 hour prior to the colonic. Please refer to our FOOD AVOID and BENEFICIAL FOODS LIST. It is always a good idea to eat healthy, drink a lot of water, and try to avoid any foods that constipating and/or gassy at least 24 hours prior to your treatment.

    WHAT CAN I EXPECT AFTERWARDS?

Most likely you will feel great!!! You will feel lighter and enjoy a sense of well-being, clarity, and mental alertness. Any activity you would normally do such as work or exercise is fine. For some, the colonic may trigger several subsequent bowel movements for the next few hours; but there usually is not any uncontrollable urgency or discomfort. In some instances, individuals may experience a short-term “HEALING CRISIS”. We tell our clients that if they feel tired, have a headache, or experience any discomfort after the treatment, not to worry. Sometimes our bodies react to the healing process by temporarily giving us symptoms. Please contact your therapist so they can give advice and helpful tips to help assist you through this. Although this HEALING CRISIS is not common, nor experienced by most clients, it is a part of any holistic therapy that assists the body in ridding toxicity.

WHY IS IMPORTANT TO HAVE A SERIES OF COLONICS?

In order to obtain results of lasting benefits, one should commit to a series of treatments. Having colonics regularly for a period of time, such as weekly or several times a week is what we refer to as a “Series”. In most chronic cases, we need to work on hydrating the system and loosening the hard fecal matter before we can actually start to get the matter to release. How many session each individual needs, varies from person to person. Again, this can only be properly considered once an objective has been identified.

ARE COLONICS DANGEROUS IN ANY WAY?

Being an essentially natural process, there is virtually no danger with a colonic. When you are under the care of a Licensed and Certified therapist, your safety is their primary concern. Our intent is to provide a safe and healthy service we take care of you in every way, so there is no need to worry.

WILL COLONICS HELP WITH CHRONIC CONSTIPATION?

There are three factors involved in having a well-functioning colon: diet, exercise, and attitude. All three must be in balance for a colon to function well. Often, however, because the colon has been sluggish for so long; it has become severely weakened due to being constantly bathed in toxic waste, stretched from holding excessive stool, and constricted by chronic tension. The process of colon irrigation is excellent for cleansing and healing the colon so that changes in diet, exercise and attitude are then able to produce beneficial effects. Many people find the results and great relief provided by colonics often motivate them to institute positive changes in their lifestyle. It can truly be a life-changing experience, on all levels of one’s being.

IS IT TRUE THAT COLONICS WASH OUT THE INTESTINAL FLORA AND VALUABLE NUTRIENTS?

The real truth is the washing out of putrefied material is in the large intestine; actually increases the good intestinal flora. Good bacteria can only breed in a clean environment that has been washed free of putrefaction and harmful bacteria. That is why the intestines of a newborn baby immediately begin to grow good intestinal flora. Each time you clean out the putrefying garbage and make a better environment for the flora to flourish, they start to multiply immediately in their natural state. This is also why it is so beneficial to take a good quality PROBIOTIC after each colonic. Each capsule of friendly bacteria delivers millions and millions of organisms into the colon, which grows and multiplies for a healthier and more balanced intestinal ecosystem.

WHAT EFFECT DOES COLON HYDROTHERAPY HAVE ON OUR IMMUNE SYSTEMS?

The removal of stagnant waste material and hardened, impacted toxic residue could rejuvenate the immune tissue that resides in the intestines. Recent European studies show that 90% of immune tissues reside in the intestines. It is a fact that 80% of ALL ILLNESSES start in the large intestines. Colon Hydrotherapy is not a cure-all, but a critical adjunctive therapy in the overall health care of our clients

WHAT WILL BE OKAY TO EAT AFTER GETTING A COLONIC?

What we suggest is that you eat a moderate amount of whatever seems gentle and nourishing to you. Using common sense is the best approach. Eating a meal or foods that are known to cause trouble in your abdomen, or causing you excessive gas directly following a colonic is not an intelligent choice. Favor foods such as green leafy salads, vegetable soups, fruits, and unrefined foods are best. Eating Organic and Pure foods is always the way to go if at all possible. Drinking more fluids is also highly beneficial after a treatment. This can come in the form of vegetable and fruit juices, but distilled or purified water is preferred.

  • Colon cleansing is not a new idea; in fact, it has been carried out for thousands of years by people across the world who have enjoyed the health benefits of the treatment. Today, the treatment is safer and simpler than ever.

    An age-old treatment

The ancient Egyptians and Greeks practiced inner cleansing, as did traditional Chinese and Indian civilizations. Each of these cultures realized the many health and well-being benefits of this natural treatment, and the fact that it has endured for so long, and has spread so widely, is a testament to its effectiveness.

Around the turn of the 20th century, the first present-day colonic equipment was developed. Up to the late 20's many doctors had colonic systems in their surgeries and similar equipment was found in hospitals too. Articles dealing with colon health frequently appeared in prestigious medical and scientific journals until the early 1930's. Today, hospitals have largely replaced colonics with cheaper purgatives and laxatives, although some people find these unpleasant and ineffective.

    Modern Colon Hydrotherapy

While the treatment has taken many forms over the centuries, the essence of the therapy has remained the same – a gentle wash out of the colon or large intestine, using warm water to remove waste matter, rehydrate, and exercise the bowel.

Today’s therapists use hygienic closed systems, with clean, filtered water to cleanse the colon quickly and easily, with no fuss, no mess, and no smell, making modern Colon Hydrotherapy safer and more convenient than ever before.

This makes a modern Colon Hydrotherapy treatment as normal and natural as any other part of your regular health and well-being regime. Many of our clients have colonics on a regular basis, to complement other healthy lifestyle choices such as healthy eating, stress management, and regular exercise.

  • WHAT IS REIKI?

Reiki is a holistic healing practice that originated in Japan. It involves the use of hands-on or hands-off techniques to channel and balance the flow of life force energy within the body. The term "Reiki" is composed of two Japanese words: "Rei," which means universal or spiritual, and "Ki," which refers to the life force energy that flows through all living beings.

    HOW DOES REIKI WORK?

Reiki practitioners believe that they can channel healing energy into a recipient's body through their hands. This energy is thought to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and facilitate healing by restoring the body's natural energy balance. The practitioner acts as a conduit for this energy to flow into the recipient, supporting their physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

    WHAT HAPPENS DURING A
    REIKI SESSION?

During a Reiki session, the recipient typically lies down fully clothed on a massage table. The practitioner places their hands lightly on or near various parts of the recipient's body, focusing on areas where energy flow is blocked or disrupted. The recipient may experience sensations of warmth, tingling, or deep relaxation. Sessions can last anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour or more, depending on the practitioner and the recipient's needs.

    IS REIKI A RELIGION?

No, Reiki is not a religion. It is a spiritual Practice that does not require a specific belief system. While Reiki may incorporate some spiritual principles, it is compatible with various religious or spiritual backgrounds, as well as with individuals who do not follow any particular belief system.

    CAN REIKI CURE ILLNESSES?

Reiki is not intended as a replacement for medical treatment, and it is not scientifically proven to cure illnesses. However, many people believe that Reiki can support the body's natural healing processes, enhance well-being, and complement traditional medical care. It's important to consult with a qualified healthcare professional for medical concerns.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF REIKI?

Reiki is often believed to offer a wide range of potential benefits, although individual experiences can vary. Some of the commonly cited benefits of Reiki include:

    Stress Reduction

    Relaxation and Calm.

    Pain Management

    Enhanced Energy Flow

  • ACUPUNCTURE BASICS

Why choose acupuncture? Acupuncture is the most famous form of Holistic medicine. Although it has been practiced in various parts of Asia for over 2000 years, acupuncture is relatively new in the United States. And yet people are quickly coming to understand how potent this gentle medicine is, and how it can help people, not only to heal but to avoid some of the side effects of Western medical drugs and surgical interventions.

As defined by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, “the term ‘acupuncture’ describes a family of procedures involving the stimulation of anatomical points on the body using a variety of techniques. The acupuncture technique that has been most often studied scientifically involves penetrating the skin with thin, solid, metallic needles that are manipulated by the hands or by electrical stimulation.”

Scientists are studying the efficacy of acupuncture for a wide range of conditions, and many theories regarding “how it works” are still under development.

    HOW DOES IT WORK?

Acupuncture works by using needles to balance and move the vital energy that circulates through our bodies. The experience of pain is viewed by Chinese Medicine as vital energy that is stuck and unable to move through a particular area of the body.

Other types of illness are related to the body’s “organs,” the energy of which can be accessed and manipulated by using points on the energy pathways. In order to understand the relationships of the channels and the organs and any particular person’s symptoms, we have to gather information about the person’s whole health pattern. Then we can create a plan for treatment and give the patient an idea of how long it might take to bring their body back into balance and provide relief for their symptoms.

The body learns from the acupuncture needles how to return to balance, or how to move through areas of blockage; acupuncture treatments are like tutoring sessions that train the body and enable it to take over the work of creating and maintaining balance on its own. The goal of acupuncture is not to have the patient come in forever for treatment, but to help the patient get to a place where they only need to come in occasionally for a “tune-up” or when a new issue arises.

    WHAT DOES IT TREAT?

Acupuncture is capable of treating a wide range of health problems. Some of the general categories of health concerns we treat are:

Musculoskeletal problems: pain syndromes such as fibromyalgia and arthritis, back pain, sciatica, neck pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shoulder and knee pain, general muscle tightness…

Digestive disorders: gastric reflux, IBS, constipation, diarrhea, digestive-related side effects of medications, nausea, morning sickness, ulcers, hemorrhoids…

Gynecological disorders: pain and cramping, abnormal bleeding, infertility, menopausal symptoms, PMS, amenorrhea…

Emotional issues: stress, depression, anxiety, manic depression, grief…

Weight loss and others: skin disorders, sleep problems, immune deficiency, allergies, asthma, common cold, smoking cessation, weight loss…

…and many, many other problems and conditions.

Acupuncture often works alongside, and complements, other healing modalities – such as Western Medicine (including Western medications), Chiropractic, Herbal Medicine, Reiki, and Massage – to name a few.

    WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE?

Acupuncture needles cause the vital energy of the body, called “Qi” (pronounced “chee”), to gather at the points that are needled. Sometimes needling also causes sensations in other parts of the body that seem unrelated, but are actually areas along which those energy pathways flow. Sometimes a “Qi Sensation” can feel like an achiness or warmth or tingling at the point. Acupuncture needles are VERY thin. The reason the needles can be so thin is that, unlike syringes, no fluid passes through the needles, so the needles can be as thin as a hair. Sometimes, however, needle insertions can be briefly uncomfortable. Usually, this sensation dissipates within moments. If not, the acupuncturist will adjust or remove the needle so that you can be comfortable. Comfort and relaxation are key parts of acupuncture.

Along with needling, the acupuncturist may use other tools of the medicine. One is electro-acupuncture, which is used to gently stimulate the needles on different parts of the acupuncture pathway. Another is cupping, where glass suction cups are placed in different areas where there is muscle tension.

At Acupuncture for Everyone we use only sterile disposable needles. We are carefully trained and tested in clean needle technique and precautions in needling. Although acupuncture is generally safe, it may have some side effects including bruising, numbness or tingling near the needle site, and rarely dizziness or fainting. Although acupuncture has many benefits for pregnancy, there are some points that are contraindicated, so be sure to tell your practitioner if you are pregnant.

"I always look forward to my appointments at Refresh. The environment is relaxing & homey; I leave in a better mindset than I walked in. Kate is incredibly welcoming, and the bodywork sessions leave me feeling less tense than when I walked in the door. I highly recommend Refresh.
